Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of proprioceptionbased kinesio taping on muscle activity, upper extremity function, proprioception, and activities of daily living in patients with chronic stroke. Methods Eighteen patients with chronic stroke were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 9) and a control group (n = 9). The experimental group received proprioceptive training combined with kinesio taping, while the control group received proprioceptive training only. The intervention was performed for 30 minutes per session, five times a week, for four weeks. Outcome measures included surface electromyography (EMG) of the extensor carpi radialis longus, the Fugl Meyer Assessment for the Upper Extremity (FMAUE), a proprioception test, and the Korean version of the Modified Barthel Index (KMBI). Pre and post intervention assessments were conducted. Results The experimental group showed significant improvements in muscle activity and FMAUE scores after the intervention (p < .05), whereas the control group showed no significant changes. Although proprioception and KMBI scores increased in both groups, these changes were not statistically significant. No significant betweengroup differences were observed in the change scores of all outcome measures. Conclusion Proprioceptionbased kinesio taping may be effective in improving muscle activity and upper extremity motor function in patients with chronic stroke. This intervention may serve as a useful adjunctive therapeutic strategy for enhancing sensorimotor recovery in clinical rehabilitation settings.
